Working a lot on "FREEDOM"

Since the opening of our Galery I have been very busy. After Raymonde Sampers paintings were gone back to her, we filled the room with textile art from myself. The small pieces on the walls with nice lightning and my large "Stadhuis" piece in the window. The little pond here is now sold to a nice lady from Germany

In the mean time I finished a lovely babyquilt for a little girl and it is now in the USA

But the most important work I am doing is preparing for an exhibition in September with my friends from KC61 The theme is "Vrijheid" and I will make 2 large pieces for this show. One is finished but I have not made a picture from it yet, just the working progess

This is the start of my first piece called Vrijheid and is made from silk stuffed with fiberfill 

After that I wrote the name vrijheid and sew it on a large frame from the back,
not easy I must say. I painted the letters red white and blue. Then I will hang it on silk tread.
To say:Freedom hangs by a thread.

OMG I started the Berlin Wall That is a very difficult task, but I love it. The word peace I made first with a computer program, then painted in on silk cut it out and sew it down. Names, dates and faces followed. A white dove not to be missed. The picture here just shows the start and I am now almost finished with it . I put a large hole on the side to look through at East Berlin. At the end of August it must be finished and I will surely put it here on my blog. At the moment it gets a lot of attention from people walking in the galery and they come back to see the progress, so that is nice.

Brand new atelier

What to write, so many things happened since last time. Everytime I think,"oh that's what I need to write about, but life goes so fast, the next thing is happened. So now I hope to find some easy time and start working in my brand new atelier.
After renting away our space, for many years, our studio is ours again. We did a lot of cleaning painting the walls and now since one week we are open three days a week to the public.

We had a nice opening day and three of my friends from KC61 are here in the gallery showing art until end of May.

Me, myself just show some necklages, recycled handbags and textile art, like my small pictures from our city Roermond and Landscapes.
I'm also painting on silk and sewing in the shop as I am working on large textile art pieces for a show in September. Our citygarden is sooo very beautiful, all the rhodondendrons and azalea's are in full bloom and the roses spread their enchanting fragance. This is a wonderful spring!!

I'am very satisfied

Not writing much lately, but whow I was working a lot last month. First I did some silkpainting to make a large kind of balloon, which is working very nice in the wind and for the next weekend Dieter my hubby and I will be showing our art at the castle Aerwinkel not far from here. Dieter will show 3 of his Faces made from wood.

And I made one on canvas printed tree designed from my textile art and that will hang in a very interesting large tree in the park.

Then I got a nice letter from KC61 a group of very good artist and I am accepted in the group which is great. They too will have an exhibition  soon, but this time not yet with work from me, so I hope to be invited next time. I wil write about the artist from this group after their exhibition.

KC61

Yesterday I finished my latest artwork contemporary textile. I started in februar and did a lot of stitching. First I made a pattern from a landscape and than I worked small pieces all hand made and stitched them from top (sky) to bottom together. I am very pleased with it, as mostly I work very secure and precise. This time I wanted to work more freely. I took a workshop from Jude Hill, she workes a lot with raw edges and I tried to put this work a little into my piece.

Keep going

To keep on going is all I really want to, but now those wishes are there but not always possible to fullfill. Anyway my life has changed a little and it feels like I have to move faster and do more and more. Restless is what you could name it. But what is nice about it is that I make many stiches every day and that means that my art work is growing everyday. Here a picture of that piece. 

I am sure I need to work on it at least one month more. At the same time I still want to learn more about textile, to combine different textures together and build up more layers. It is nice to see how I become looser in my work. I learned a lot from Jude Hill she creates lovely ragged pieces, and tells stories with her cloth. I also made an other collage from my sudoku papers.

 I like that a lot and gives me a smile when a piece is done. 

That is it for today. I have to get up and start stitching again.

Colette Berends, textile artist

 I'm a big collector of textile magazins and the first thing I do when I come to the usa is going to one of the great bookstores there and see what is new. I love Quilting Arts or Haut Bags. these are magazins which I can not get here. There are many great textileartist around the world and I would love to meet some. In may I go to a big show of OEQC that is the Open European Quilt Championships. This year it will be from 3 - 5 of may and there will be a show-of-the-art work from Colette Berends who died last year but worked more than 20 years as a textielartist. She was born as a boy and used to work in clubs around Europe and so her work was mostly based on  theater, nightclubs and backstage scenes. Very beautiful, take a look at the websites because her work was really fantastic.

My New Studio

It took a long time, before we had our non-paying tenants out of the house. Not only dit it cost us a lot of money, but most of all a lot of nerves. But hey it's all over and everything looks very different. I'm a little afraid to get other tenants in our home, so we took a decision:

Big Bang (SOLD)

Thanks to my dear husband, who helps me to get everything done. I would like to create a place where people like to come together and be creatieve. Many of my readers know, that I had an own Gallery, but I like to go to different galleries with my Artwork, and now my gallery is a Wig Shop and is called "Wig it"

The attic must be cleaned

the Sofa I had refurbished my self which took 2 days, but it looks like new again.

 Anyway I think for 1 or 2 weeks more we will be busy. I have a wet werkspace too, which is important for my Silkpainting. Long time ago I did silkpainting and I'm going back to do that again. Part of the painted silk I will use in artquilts. So wish me luck that everything works out.

Estate Day at the Castle

We had such a lovely day at the castle Aerwinkel last sunday. The weather was superb and many people came to visit. There was an smith, a bakery a woman who made honey wine, candles and more.

At the Chapel 4 people showed there arts. I found a very interesting artist who makes drawings from animal eyes and I heard the children who arived at the park: We want to go and have a look at the eyes! So great! Here is a picture of it.

I showed just 6 pieces of my textile art pieces but as they stood so close to the peole, I had a lot of succes and hopefully some guest wil come back to me.

Last day of my Exhibition

A whole month my textile Art was exhibited at the Clubhouse from the Golfcourse in Herkenbosch at the St. Andrews Restaurant. I was very pleased with that opportunity and many people saw my work there. The opening was made by the President of the Club Mr. Jan Hol.


                                                   



The last work I made was from the Clubhouse itself and ofcourse it is so detailed that it took a long time to finished it. Here some picures of that work.

I hung some work on the pillars with lights on, so they were exposed correctly. Than Dieter had made 2 large frames, so I was was able to hang 2 pieces on that frame. It worked out great.

I was very pleased that a fellow Artist: Marianne Delmee took the time to come over and had a look at my work. Unfortunately nothing sold, I was surprised because all found it wonderful what I had created, but sometimes an artist must have patience and wait for better times. Yet I go by with my work. I love to have fabric and colors around me. So wait and see what the next will be. I was introduced by Marianne to Bird art installation so that's my next goal.

Handwerktentoonstelling "handicrafts exhibition"

For the 4th time: naald en draad; organizes these great crafts exhibition in the Caroluskapel and the Carthusian Monastery in Roermond "Naald en Draad" Needl and Tread a spezialized shop for everything You need for needl craft like "Merklappen"samplers, for stiching letters in different styles. Many people in the netherlands try to keep these tradition. Cityscapes made ​​with cross stabbing, or tiny flowers and houses. Just lovely also some quilts are shown.

My work was showed for the second time and I got a real nice opportunity to show my "Stadhuis" Textile art as the big opening of this exhibition.

The alderman Mr. Wim Kemp and Sabine de Bruin the dir. of Naald en Draad, took the silk cover away from my Textile work. All the people who stood around it where very surprized and I got a lot of compliments.
Mr. Kemp wanted to know everything about it. How long it tooks to finished this work and he found his working space behind one of the windows. He promised me to talk to the mayor about this.

I finished my Textile Art

I am very happy today. My last work is finished and I am very pleased with it. I thought yesterday I was done, but than when I looked at it I see some more small details which I liked to put in. Many little parts are hand made, they are too small for the sewing machine.

I did a lot an the tree on the left hand side and in the bunker I put in a rake which is an important tool in the golfgame.
A few more chairs on the terras and even some tiny flowers in some flower pots.
After that we bought a new 3D Canvas where I sew on all my art pieces. I like that because it gets a very uniform view.

Not an easy job, because it is handmade, and not all the corners are the same.

       DONE!! After 17 days, something like 100 hours of work.
